This famous temple is located in Poonamallee in Chennai city and is a famous Lord Shiva temple. The presiding deity is called as Vaitheeswarar and mother is called as Thaiyal Nayagi. This famous temple is very similar to the Vaitheeswaran Koil temple which is situated near Kumbakonam. Kumbakonam is one of the Navagraha sthalam for angarakan. The temple is also better known as Uthara Vaitheeswaran Koil. The village Poonamallee was earlier known as Puvirinthamallee. Hence, we can say that this temple is also among the Navagraha temples of Chennai. The other temples that are the Navagraha temples around Chennai are as follows.

The temple is very famous for one of the festivals which is celebrated here known as Cheevai Shoshan. This temple is the Parihara Sathalam for it. A unique phenomenon occur on 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th of Maasi when the sun rays fall directly on the main deity around 6 a.m.. This unique phenomena is worshiped by people all over the country. Also, the Surya Puja is done in the temple during the same period of Thamizh month Maasi. Special pooja as that of Sri Angarankan is done on Tuesdays.
In India, the temples are related with the specific blessing and with this Temple it is said that people who have their marriage or those who have the Angaraka Dosha can visit the temple and offer prayers. People who are childless can also worship the deity to get the blessings. In Tamil, the name Vaitheeswaran means a physician and hence the main deity is prayed by several people to cure the ailments and diseases. The positive vibrations inside the temple is what people believe are the curing elements that heals almost all the diseases.
Talking more about the architecture of the temple, the temple is facing towards the east and is a three-tier Raja gopuram with thirukulam and proper fencing. There is a compound wall covering the temple and a Shiva lingam is present in the entrance of the temple. The rajagopuram is on the North side of the temple. There you can also see another entrance which comes from the east direction. This eastern entrance leads you to the Dwajasthambam or Kodimaram, Nandi and the main deity of Lord Shiva. The temple is not just famous for offering prayers and worshiping lord Shiva, but also the history of the temple is quite amazing. The temple is a medium-sized chola temple which was built back to the times of Rajaraja 1. You can also identify a lot of inscriptions and unique sculptures which are engraved all around the temple.
You can also see a lot of beautiful wall carvings and architectural sculptures all around the inner corridor. The temple is nearly 1,000-year-old but still there is a lot to get inspiration for the modern architecture. The main entrance is vivid and bright with some amazing wall carvings. The temple is also known as Uthara Vaitheeswaran koil. You can also see the idols of Ganesha and Murugan on the either side while you to enter through the Courtyard of the temple. You can also see Palipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Nandhi value entrance the maha Mandapam of the temple. Unique things about the Nandi in this temple is that it is known as Vishnu Nandi. Talking about the presiding deity of the temple is Vaitheeswarar. He is in the form of big shivling which is facing towards the east direction and the sanctum of Iswaran has the idol of alagu Vinayaka aur Ganesha on one side and sevvai padham or angaraka on the other side. You can also see Dwarabalakars Thindi and Mundi on either side of the sanctum.
There is a large outer Prakaram followed by inner prakaram. One can also see a huge Temple tank which is just at the periphery of the temple. While you enter the inner corridor of the temple you can also visit the shrines of Natraja with sivakami, somaskanda and Muruga. The inner prakaram also consists of Surya (sun), Veeran, Vinayaka, Vishwanathar with Vishalakshi, Kumbeswarar, Kailasanathar, Annapoorani, Mahalingeswarar, Adi Shankar and Maha Lakshmi.
